How to Start a Steel or Aluminium Fabrication Workshop in India: Welding, Machines, Safety, GST, Pricing and Growth

November 6, 2026

Gates, grills, railings, staircases, sheds, mezzanine floors, shop shutters, steel furniture, structural frames and aluminium windows: fabrication workshops make the metalwork that every building needs. Builders, contractors, homeowners, shops, factories and warehouses all need fabricators they can trust, and skilled welders and fabricators are in demand across India. This guide explains how to start a fabrication business in India, from licences and costs to finding your first customers.

This guide explains how to start a fabrication workshop, the machines and safety it needs, the rules that apply, how to price jobs and how to grow.

  • Skills come first: welding, cutting, measuring, reading drawings and finishing. Recognised training and certification build credibility.
  • A workshop needs reliable three-phase power, space for materials and work, and suitable zoning for noise.
  • Safety is critical: welding fumes, sparks, electric shock, eye damage and heavy lifting cause serious injuries.
  • Factory registration applies once you reach the worker threshold under the OSH Code, and pollution control consent may be needed depending on your processes.
  • Price jobs by weight, by square foot or per piece, with materials, labour, finishing, transport and installation clearly included.

The market in numbers

Fabrication falls under what MoSPI’s surveys call fabricated metal products, which includes welding, fabrication and machining. In 2023-24 there were about 6.8 lakh small unincorporated establishments in this activity, and only 55.4% ran without hired workers, a lower share than most activities. Average value added was ₹5,95,614 a year in urban areas. One-person workshops added ₹1,83,637 on average, while those with hired workers added ₹7,61,369.

Step 1: Choose your focus

  • Residential fabrication: gates, grills, railings, staircases, balcony and window grills, and small sheds.
  • Commercial and industrial: structural frames, sheds, mezzanines, racks, platforms and machine bases.
  • Aluminium and uPVC windows and partitions, using profiles from system suppliers.
  • Steel furniture for offices, schools, hospitals and shops.
  • Repairs and site welding, a steady source of small jobs.

Step 2: Skills and certification

  • ITI courses for welders and fitters.
  • Skill India courses in welding and fabrication, through the capital goods and other sector skill councils, with recognised certificates. Find centres on Skill India Digital.
  • Welding processes: arc welding (SMAW), MIG/MAG and TIG, each suited to different metals and jobs.
  • Reading drawings and measuring accurately, which saves material and rework.
  • Experience under a senior fabricator, especially for structural work.

For structural work, clients may ask for welders certified to recognised standards and for designs approved by a structural engineer.

Step 3: Workshop and machines

Workshop: enough covered space for cutting, welding, assembly and painting, open space for materials, good ventilation, a strong floor, and reliable three-phase power. Choose a location where noise and sparks won’t disturb neighbours, and check local zoning; many cities require workshops to be in industrial or commercial areas.

Machines and tools:

  • welding machines: arc and MIG, and TIG for stainless steel and aluminium
  • cutting: a chop saw, angle grinders, and a plasma or gas cutter
  • drilling machine and magnetic drill
  • bending and rolling machines for pipes and sheets, as your work grows
  • measuring and marking tools, squares, levels and clamps
  • painting equipment: a compressor and spray gun, and primer and paint
  • lifting gear: chain blocks and stands
  • for aluminium windows: profile cutting and crimping machines from your system supplier

Step 4: Registrations and rules

  • Shops and establishments registration or industrial registration, and a trade licence. See shop and establishment registration and trade licences.
  • Factory registration: under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, a workshop using power becomes a factory once it has 20 or more workers, with duties on safety, health and welfare.
  • Pollution control consent from your State Pollution Control Board, depending on your processes, such as painting, galvanising or large-scale welding.
  • Electrical safety for your connection and machines.
  • GST registration once turnover crosses the threshold, and usually earlier, since builders and businesses need GST invoices. See GST registration for small businesses.
  • Udyam registration: free, and useful for machine loans. See our Udyam guide.

Step 5: Safety

Fabrication is one of the riskier small trades. Make safety non-negotiable:

  • eye and face protection: welding helmets with the right shade, and safety glasses for grinding
  • protective clothing: leather gloves, aprons, safety shoes and flame-resistant clothing
  • ventilation and fume extraction, especially for galvanised steel and stainless steel
  • fire safety: extinguishers nearby, no flammable materials near welding, and a check after work for smouldering sparks
  • electrical safety: proper earthing of machines and dry conditions
  • guarding on grinders and saws, and training before anyone uses a machine
  • safe lifting and working at height during site installation, with harnesses

Step 6: Materials

  • Steel: pipes, square and rectangular hollow sections, angles, channels, flats, sheets and bars; buy from reputable dealers, with BIS-certified steel where required, and keep bills.
  • Stainless steel for railings and kitchens, in the right grade.
  • Aluminium profiles and accessories from system suppliers for windows and partitions.
  • Consumables: electrodes and wire, gases, grinding and cutting discs, primers and paints.

Track material use per job, and use offcuts wherever possible.

Step 7: GST

Fabricated goods are generally taxed at 18%, and jobs that combine supply and installation at a site may be treated as works contracts. Iron and steel products are taxed at 18%. Check the right treatment for your jobs with a chartered accountant, and make invoices with Advanton’s free GST invoice generator.

Step 8: Pricing

  • By weight: common for gates, grills and structures, priced per kilogram of finished work, including materials, labour, primer and paint.
  • By square foot: common for grills, railings and aluminium windows.
  • Per piece or job: for standard items and repairs.
  • Installation and transport: quote separately or include clearly.
  • Advance: take an advance to buy materials, and stage payments for larger jobs.

An illustrative example: a main gate

These figures are illustrative; steel prices change often. A double-leaf gate uses about 150 kg of steel sections:

  • steel at an illustrative ₹70 a kg: ₹10,500
  • consumables, primer and paint: ₹2,000
  • labour for fabrication and painting: ₹4,500
  • transport and installation: ₹2,000
  • full cost: ₹19,000, or about ₹127 per kg of steel

Quoting around ₹150 to ₹160 per kg, depending on design complexity, would give a fair margin. Always quote with the design, sections and finish specified, and recheck steel prices before confirming.

Installing on site safely

Much fabrication work ends with installation at a customer’s site, where accidents often happen:

  • plan the job: measurements confirmed, access checked, power available, and the right number of people for lifting
  • lift safely: use enough helpers, chain blocks or cranes for heavy items, and never lift alone
  • work at height safely: use proper scaffolding, ladders and safety harnesses for balconies, roofs and upper floors
  • protect the site: cover floors and fittings, control sparks near flammable materials, and keep the public away
  • check alignment and fixings before leaving, and clean up the site
  • hand over: explain care, such as painting and lubricating hinges and locks

Step 9: Get customers

  • Builders, contractors and architects for new buildings.
  • Homeowners through Google, word of mouth and photos of your work.
  • Shops, factories and warehouses for sheds, shutters and racks.
  • Hardware stores and interior designers who recommend fabricators. See how to open a hardware or paint store.
  • Google Business Profile and the India Business Directory: list your workshop free.

Step 10: Grow

  • Hire welders and helpers. The ASUSE figures show workshops with hired workers add four times the value of one-person shops. Check costs with Advanton’s hiring cost calculator.
  • Invest in machines that speed up repetitive work.
  • Take on structural and industrial jobs, with engineering support.
  • Add aluminium or uPVC windows through a system supplier partnership.
  • Funding: a Mudra or PMEGP loan, or a bank loan with CGTMSE cover, can fund machines. See business loans and government schemes.

Costs to plan for

  • workshop rent, and a three-phase power connection
  • welding machines, cutting tools, drills and lifting gear
  • safety equipment for every worker
  • steel and consumables for each job, funded by advances
  • wages for welders, fitters and helpers
  • electricity, gases and electrodes
  • transport for materials and installation
  • machine maintenance and insurance

Common mistakes

  • Skipping safety equipment and fume extraction.
  • Inaccurate measurements, leading to rework on site.
  • Quoting without specifications, then arguing about sections and finish.
  • Not updating quotes when steel prices change.
  • Weak structural work without proper design for loads.

Frequently asked questions about starting a fabrication business in India

How do I protect my margin when steel prices change?
Quote with a validity period, recheck prices before confirming orders, and take an advance to buy steel as soon as an order is confirmed.

What’s the difference between MIG and arc welding?
Arc (stick) welding is simple, portable and widely used for structural steel and site work. MIG welding is faster and cleaner for workshop jobs. TIG gives the neatest welds for stainless steel and aluminium.

Do I need a licence to start a fabrication workshop?
Usually shops and establishments or industrial registration, a trade licence, and depending on your size and processes, pollution control consent. A workshop using power becomes a factory under the OSH Code once it has 20 or more workers.

What GST applies to fabrication work?
Fabricated steel goods are generally taxed at 18%. Jobs combining supply and installation may be works contracts.

How do fabricators price gates and grills?
Commonly by weight or by square foot, including materials, labour and finishing, with installation quoted separately.

Do I need welding certification?
It’s not always legally required, but recognised training and certification build trust and are often needed for structural and industrial work.
