Udyam registration is India’s official registration for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It’s free, it takes most owners less than an hour, and it opens the door to cheaper loans, protection against late payments and preferences in government purchasing. Yet most small businesses still haven’t registered: MoSPI’s ASUSE 2025 found that only 37.50% of unincorporated businesses were registered under any act or authority.
This guide explains who can register, what you need, how to do it step by step, and which benefits are worth knowing about.
Key points
Table of Contents
- Udyam registration is free and done online at udyamregistration.gov.in, the Ministry of MSME’s portal. You don’t need an agent.
- It’s self-declared and paperless: you register with Aadhaar and PAN, and the portal pulls investment and turnover details from income tax and GST records.
- Since 1 April 2025, a micro enterprise has up to ₹2.5 crore of investment and ₹10 crore of turnover; small up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; medium up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. A business must meet both limits.
- Businesses without PAN or GST can register through the Udyam Assist Platform via a facilitator.
- The most useful benefits are protection against late payments from buyers, collateral-free loans backed by CGTMSE, and preferences in government purchasing.
Who can register?
Any enterprise engaged in manufacturing or providing services can register, whether it’s a proprietorship, partnership firm, LLP, company, cooperative or trust. Traders were brought into Udyam in 2021 for priority sector lending purposes, so shops and wholesalers can register too.
Your category depends on two numbers: investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. From 1 April 2025:
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
You need to be within both limits for a category. A business with ₹3 crore of investment and ₹8 crore of turnover is small, not micro, because its investment is over the micro limit. Exports don’t count towards turnover for classification.
Almost every small business in India qualifies as micro. These limits were raised from ₹1 crore and ₹5 crore for micro enterprises in the Union Budget 2025-26, so many businesses that were previously "small" are now "micro".
What you need
- Aadhaar of the proprietor (for a proprietorship), the managing partner (for a partnership) or the authorised signatory (for a company, LLP or other entity). The mobile number linked to that Aadhaar must be working, because you’ll receive an OTP.
- PAN of the enterprise (for a proprietorship, the proprietor’s PAN).
- GSTIN, if your business is required to register for GST. If it isn’t, you can still register.
- Bank account details (account number and IFSC).
- Business details: name, type of organisation, address, date of starting, main activity with its NIC code, number of employees, and investment and turnover figures.
You don’t upload documents. Udyam is based on self-declaration, and the portal checks your details against government records.
How to register, step by step
- Open udyamregistration.gov.in. Check the address carefully, because many look-alike sites charge fees for what is free.
- Choose "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME".
- Enter the Aadhaar number and name, then validate with the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Select your type of organisation and enter PAN. The portal validates PAN and, where available, pulls details from your income tax returns.
- Fill in business details: enterprise name, plant or unit locations, official address with PIN code, date of incorporation or starting, bank details, NIC activity code (search for the closest description, such as "beauty treatment" or "retail sale in non-specialised stores"), number of employees by gender, and investment and turnover.
- Choose any benefits you’re interested in, such as GeM or TReDS onboarding, if the portal offers the option.
- Submit with the final OTP. You receive a permanent Udyam Registration Number immediately and an e-certificate by email.
Your Udyam certificate doesn’t need renewing. Investment and turnover figures update automatically from your income tax and GST filings, and your category is reviewed based on them.
No PAN or GST? Use the Udyam Assist Platform
Many very small businesses, such as street vendors, home-based tailors and small repair shops, don’t have business PAN or GST registration. The Udyam Assist Platform lets these informal micro enterprises get an Udyam Assist Certificate with the help of a designated agency, such as a bank, SIDBI or another facilitator. The certificate is treated like Udyam registration for priority sector lending. Ask your bank branch or the District Industries Centre (DIC) how to apply.
The benefits that actually matter
Protection against late payments
This is one of the most valuable benefits, and the least used. Under the MSMED Act, buyers must pay registered micro and small suppliers within the agreed period, which can’t exceed 45 days from acceptance of the goods or services. If they pay late, they owe compound interest at three times the bank rate notified by the RBI. You can file a case on the government’s MSME Samadhaan portal, which routes it to the state’s Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council.
Income tax law adds a second push. Since financial year 2023-24, a business buyer can only deduct payments owed to registered micro and small enterprises in the year it actually pays them on time. Many larger buyers now ask their suppliers for Udyam certificates and pay registered suppliers faster as a result.
Collateral-free loans
Banks can lend to micro and small enterprises without collateral, backed by a guarantee from the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE). The Union Budget 2025-26 raised the guarantee cover for micro and small enterprises from ₹5 crore to ₹10 crore. MSME loans also count as priority sector lending, which encourages banks to lend to you. See our guide to business loans and government schemes.
Government purchasing
Central ministries and public sector undertakings must buy at least 25% of their annual purchases from micro and small enterprises, with a share reserved for businesses owned by women and by SC/ST entrepreneurs. Registered micro and small enterprises can also be exempted from paying earnest money deposits on tenders. Selling to government starts with registering as a seller on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
Other benefits
Udyam registration helps with subsidies under various central and state schemes, concessions on patent and trademark fees, support for trade fairs and exhibitions, and access to the TReDS platforms, where you can sell unpaid invoices from large buyers to financiers for early payment. The Union Budget 2025-26 also announced customised credit cards with a ₹5 lakh limit for micro enterprises registered on Udyam.
Udyam, GST and shop registration: what’s the difference?
Owners often confuse three separate registrations. You may need all three, and none replaces the others:
| Registration | What it’s for | Who needs it | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Udyam | Recognition as an MSME, for loans, payment protection and schemes | Optional, but recommended for every eligible business | Free |
| GST | Collecting and paying GST | Required above the turnover threshold and in some other cases | Free |
| Shops and establishments | Permission to run premises under state labour law | Required for shops, offices and many service premises, depending on your state | Set by each state |
See our guides to GST registration and shop and establishment registration.
Udyam for different types of business
- Proprietorships register with the proprietor’s Aadhaar and PAN. Most small shops, service providers and home businesses fall here.
- Partnership firms register with the firm’s PAN and a managing partner’s Aadhaar.
- LLPs and companies register with their own PAN and an authorised signatory’s Aadhaar.

Common mistakes
- Paying an agent or a look-alike website. Registration is free on the official portal.
- Choosing the wrong NIC code. Pick the code that matches your main activity; it decides how your business is classified for schemes.
- Entering different figures from your tax returns. The portal compares them, so keep them consistent.
- Registering twice. Each enterprise should have one Udyam registration. If you add new units or activities, update the existing one.
- Forgetting to update. If your address, bank account or activities change, log in and update your registration.
After you register
- Put your Udyam number on your invoices, letterhead and website. Advanton’s invoice generator lets you add it in the notes.
- Tell your business customers you’re registered. It can speed up payments.
- Add it to your business listings. In the free India Business Directory, registration details and a GST number help customers trust your listing. List your business free.
