Why is “Donda” Controversial?
Following weeks of delay and several stadium-filled public listening sessions, Kanye West’s Donda arrived Sunday morning. The two-hour, 27 track-long album features a laundry list of special appearances, including from Jay-Z, The Weeknd, Travis Scott and Lil Baby. More controversially, Marilyn Manson, who is accused of rape and sexually and psychologically abusing several women and DaBaby, who recently sparked anger for homophobic remarks during a performance are credited on West’s 10th studio album. Chris Brown, who pleaded guilty to abusing mega star Rihanna 2009, is also listed as a composer and lyricist on the track New Again.
The album – which touches on religious themes of redemption along with turmoil in Kanye West’s personal life – changed dramatically over the past month during Kanye West’s listening sessions held in Atlanta, Las Vegas and Chicago. It’s possible West will continue tinkering even after he released it to streaming on Sunday.
After dropping The Life of Pablo in 2016, Kanye West continued altering the record, adding vocals, new lyrics and remixes. Always one to court controversy, West angered some fans after both DaBaby and Manson appeared at his Chicago listening session on Thursday, on the porch of a makeshift house meant to resemble West’s childhood home.
Also at the session was Kim Kardashian, who filed for divorce this year, ending her nearly decade-long union with West. But at the Chicago listening event she fueled speculation they were getting back together after appearing in a white gown and veil. But according to a number of reports the spectacle was purely metaphorical.
Donda is named for the mercurial rapper-producer’s mother, who died in 2007. It follows his 2019 Grammy-winning Christian album, Jesus Is King. In the wake of his album release and highly publicized divorce Kanye West, 44, has also legally filed to change his name to his longtime moniker “Ye.”

Kanye West – Donda ALBUM REVIEWS
Kanye West’s new album opens with an extended chant of his dead mother’s name, which gives way to an exuberant, drumless track with lyrics about being arrested and taken to jail. Taken together, this first three-and-a-half minute stretch of Donda is the kind of tonally complex, musically adventurous suite that made West one of the most adored artists of this century. It also baits the listener to step outside of the text itself. West remains one of the world’s most famous musicians, though his music, per se, has not really driven this fame for at least five years. It is not lost on him that his public behavior — his meetings with Donald Trump, his comments in tabloid and radio interviews, his divorce — has alienated large swaths of his audience at the same time that it has kept him relevant. “You need something unexpected,” Kanye West – or should we say, Ye – opines on thumping new track ‘Believe What I Say’. Whether we need it or not, the rapper is the king of unpredictability, as characterised in the lead up to the much drawn-out release of ‘DONDA’. In the works since at least March 2020, the album was originally meant to be released 13 months ago and has in the last few weeks seemed on the verge of arriving, only to not materialise. nme.com.
Kanye West’s 10th album arrives barely finished and with a lot of baggage. Its 27 tracks include euphoric highs that lack connective tissue, a data dump of songs searching for a higher calling. pitchfork.com
Donda is Kanye West’s tribute to his late mother, Dr. Donda West, an academic who loomed large over his life as not only a guardian but also a musical advisor (Kanye has described her as his “momager.”), and who appears for a sole interlude here. (She was featured on several more tracks in an earlier version of the album.) But this album is mostly about Kanye – his continued reckoning with his faith, his relationship to the music world, the end of his marriage to Kim Kardashian. Many of the songs that sustain these ideas sound cobbled together in the last few weeks. npr.org
