October 30, 2026

Market size
About 539,500 construction equipment operators (2024)
Recent growth
About 19,500 jobs added from 2024 to 2034
Jobs and pay
Median pay $58,320 (May 2024)
Typical startup cost
High: excavator, skid steer, trailer, truck, insurance
Licenses and permits
Contractor licensing varies; 811; permits; OSHA trenching rules
Best for
Skilled operators who can price jobs and manage expensive equipment

Figures as of October 2026. Sources are listed at the end of this page.

Every foundation, driveway, drainage system, utility line and pool starts with excavation and site work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted about 539,500 construction equipment operators in 2024, with a median wage of $58,320 in May 2024, and projects about 19,500 jobs to be added by 2034.

Excavation businesses are equipment-heavy: machine payments, fuel and maintenance dominate costs. Skilled owner-operators who price accurately, keep machines busy and work safely can earn strong margins.

Business models compared

The figures below are illustrative months from our step-by-step guides, not industry averages. They show how revenue and costs typically fit together; your market, prices and costs will differ.

Business model Startup costs Example monthly revenue Costs Profit before owner pay Margin
Residential excavation (owner operator plus laborer) High: excavator, skid steer, trailer, truck, insurance $45,000 $24,900 $20,100 45%
Land clearing and grading High: forestry mulcher or dozer, trailer, insurance $38,000 $21,000 $17,000 45%
Drainage, trenching and utility hookups Moderate to high: mini excavator, trencher, permits knowledge $30,000 $17,700 $12,300 41%

Fixed and variable costs

For projections, the most useful split is between variable costs, which rise and fall with sales (materials, parts, hourly labor), and fixed costs, which you pay every month regardless (rent, salaried staff, insurance, loan payments).

Business model Variable costs (% of revenue) Fixed costs per month What it means
Residential excavation (owner operator plus laborer) 24.2% $14,000 Low costs overall: time is the main constraint
Land clearing and grading 28.9% $10,000 Low costs overall: time is the main constraint
Drainage, trenching and utility hookups 37.7% $6,400 Mostly variable: profitable early, but watch cash flow

What the numbers say

Equipment payments are the biggest fixed cost. Keeping machines working most days is the key to profit.

Owner-operators earn high margins. Running your own machine captures both labor and equipment returns.

Disposal and fuel vary by job. Accurate estimates must account for hauling distances and dump fees.

The three models in brief

Residential excavation. Foundations, additions, pools, driveways and utility trenches.

Land clearing and grading. Lot preparation, brush clearing and grading for builders and landowners.

Drainage and utility hookups. French drains, culverts, water and sewer connections.

Cost structure: residential excavation (owner operator plus laborer)

Each cost as a share of the example month’s revenue ($45,000):

Cost Monthly amount Share of revenue Type
Equipment payments $7,500 16.7% Fixed
Laborer $4,200 9.3% Variable
Fuel $3,500 7.8% Variable
Maintenance and repairs $2,500 5.6% Fixed
Dump and disposal fees $2,000 4.4% Variable
Insurance $1,800 4.0% Fixed
Payroll taxes and workers’ comp $1,200 2.7% Variable
Truck $1,200 2.7% Fixed
Marketing $1,000 2.2% Fixed
Profit before owner pay $20,100 45%

A first-year projection: residential excavation (owner operator plus laborer)

New businesses rarely start at full speed. This projection assumes revenue ramps from 35% of the example month in month 1 to 100% by month 12, variable costs move with revenue, and fixed costs stay the same every month. It’s a planning illustration, not a forecast.

Month Revenue Variable costs Fixed costs Profit Cumulative
1 $15,750 $3,815 $14,000 -$2,065 -$2,065
2 $20,250 $4,905 $14,000 $1,345 -$720
3 $24,750 $5,995 $14,000 $4,755 $4,035
4 $27,900 $6,758 $14,000 $7,142 $11,177
5 $31,500 $7,630 $14,000 $9,870 $21,047
6 $34,200 $8,284 $14,000 $11,916 $32,963
7 $36,900 $8,938 $14,000 $13,962 $46,925
8 $39,150 $9,483 $14,000 $15,667 $62,592
9 $40,950 $9,919 $14,000 $17,031 $79,623
10 $42,750 $10,355 $14,000 $18,395 $98,018
11 $44,100 $10,682 $14,000 $19,418 $117,436
12 $45,000 $10,900 $14,000 $20,100 $137,536

Year one: revenue $403,200, profit before owner pay $137,536. The first profitable month is month 2. Cumulative results bottom out at -$2,065, which is the minimum cash cushion this plan would need, before any startup costs.

Equipment payments start immediately, so this illustration loses money in month 1 and turns profitable in month 2. Financing equipment carefully, and keeping machines busy, decides first-year results.

How excavators price

  • Hourly or daily machine rates with an operator.
  • Per-job pricing for defined scopes.
  • Hauling and disposal by load.
  • Mobilization fees for moving equipment to the site.

A startup checklist

  • Check contractor licensing and permit requirements.
  • Call 811 before every dig.
  • Follow OSHA trenching and excavation rules, including protective systems for deeper trenches.
  • Finance or rent equipment carefully; rent specialty machines until you use them often.
  • Arrange insurance: general liability, equipment coverage, commercial auto and workers’ comp.

Where the opportunities are

  • Drainage solutions for wet yards and basements.
  • Builder site work for new construction.
  • Pool and ADU excavation.
  • Septic and utility work where licensed.

Key terms

Term Meaning
Mobilization Moving equipment to and from the site
Cut and fill Removing and placing soil to reach grade
Trench protection Shoring, shielding or sloping for trench safety
811 The free national call-before-you-dig number

Safety and utilities

Trench collapses and utility strikes are among the most serious risks in excavation. Call 811, verify marks, use protective systems as OSHA requires, and train every worker on site safety.

Marketing an excavation business

Builders, landscapers, pool companies and septic contractors send steady work. Homeowners find excavators through local search and photos of finished projects. See how to get more contractor leads.

Keep machines busy

Idle equipment still costs money. Fill gaps with drainage repairs, small grading jobs and subcontract work for other trades.

How to use these numbers for your own plan

  1. Start with the closest model above and its cost structure.
  2. Replace every price and cost with local quotes: insurance, wages, vehicles, materials and your expected prices.
  3. Estimate your ramp: how many jobs you can realistically win each month in year one.
  4. Separate fixed and variable costs, then calculate your break-even point with our free break-even calculator.
  5. Map cash month by month with our cash flow forecast, including equipment and loan payments.
  6. Build the plan in our free Business Planner.

These figures will also feed a planned Advanton projection tool, so you’ll be able to start from an industry template and adjust it to your situation.

About this data

Workforce figures come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024 and the 2024 to 2034 projections). Market figures cite their sources in the list above. Business model figures are illustrative months built from typical prices and costs to show how revenue, fixed costs and variable costs fit together; they are not industry averages or guarantees. We review these profiles when new government data is released, at least once a year. The same figures are available in a structured format for Advanton’s upcoming business projection tool.

Licensing and rules

Contractor licensing varies by state and project value; call 811 before every dig; permits for grading, drainage, septic and utility connections; OSHA trenching and excavation rules, including protective systems for deeper trenches; environmental rules for erosion control and disposal. Requirements change; confirm with your state and local agencies before you start.

In India

MoSPI’s survey of unincorporated businesses doesn’t cover construction, so there are no comparable small-business figures for this trade. Demand follows housing, commercial building and infrastructure activity in your area.

Licences and registrations to expect

  • Contractor registration with the PWD, municipality or other departments if you bid for government work.
  • Registration and cess under the building and other construction workers rules for larger projects.
  • A contractor licence if you engage contract workers above the threshold set by labour rules.
  • Registration under your state’s Shops and Establishments Act if you have premises or employees.
  • A trade licence from your municipal corporation or council for many shop and service businesses.
  • GST registration once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (lower in some special category states), or earlier if you sell goods to other states or through e-commerce marketplaces.
  • Professional tax registration in states that levy it.
  • Free Udyam (MSME) registration, which helps with loans, government schemes and delayed-payment protection.

Rules differ by state and city. Check with your municipal corporation, state departments and a chartered accountant before you start.
