Small businesses in Madhya Pradesh: the numbers
MoSPI’s Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) 2023-24 counted about 39.9 lakh small unincorporated non-farm establishments in Madhya Pradesh, in manufacturing, trade and other services.
| Establishments | Share of India (rank) | Value added per business, urban | Value added per business, rural | Average pay per hired worker | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | 11.3 lakh | 5.6% (#7) | ₹1,38,802 | ₹71,189 | ₹90,291 |
| Trade | 14.5 lakh | 6.34% (#5) | ₹3,11,333 | ₹1,30,995 | ₹1,00,405 |
| Services | 14.1 lakh | 4.64% (#11) | ₹2,54,941 | ₹1,34,533 | ₹1,05,409 |
Compared with India as a whole, in manufacturing, the average business added ₹95,353 of value a year, about 49% below the all-India average of ₹1,88,790; in trade, the average business added ₹2,21,602 of value a year, about 19% below the all-India average of ₹2,73,779; in services, the average business added ₹1,90,855 of value a year, about 27% below the all-India average of ₹2,62,239. Value added is what a business earns from sales minus the cost of materials, stock and other inputs, before wages and the owner’s pay.
Madhya Pradesh’s average values added and wages are below the national average, especially in manufacturing (urban businesses added ₹1,38,802 a year on average, and hired workers earned ₹90,291). Lower costs and a large, growing market, especially around Indore and Bhopal, make it attractive for businesses serving central India.
Urban or rural?
Location within Madhya Pradesh makes a big difference. Average value added per business by area: manufacturing, ₹1,38,802 urban against ₹71,189 rural (1.9 times); trade, ₹3,11,333 urban against ₹1,30,995 rural (2.4 times); services, ₹2,54,941 urban against ₹1,34,533 rural (1.9 times). The urban advantage is widest in trade. Rural businesses usually have lower rent and wage costs, and less competition, so a rural or small-town business can still be very profitable; but if your plan depends on high-spending customers, the larger towns and cities of Madhya Pradesh are where most of that spending is.
Registrations and state rules
Udyam registration is free and national, and is the gateway to MSME schemes, priority lending and protection against late payments. See our Udyam guide.
