Busy families, professionals, athletes and people with dietary needs pay for healthy, convenient meals they don’t have to plan or cook. Meal prep and personal chef businesses sell exactly that, often on weekly subscriptions. Cooks earned a median of $35,760 in May 2024, and food service managers earned $65,310, with 30% self-employed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Businesses range from personal chefs who cook in clients’ homes to meal prep companies producing and delivering packaged meals from commercial kitchens. Food safety rules, packaging and delivery logistics shape every model.

Business models compared
The figures below are illustrative months from our research, not industry averages. They show how revenue and costs typically fit together; your market, prices and costs will differ.
| Business model | Startup costs | Example monthly revenue | Costs | Profit before owner pay | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal chef (cooking in clients’ homes) | Low: knives, cookware, insurance, food safety certification | $8,000 | $2,440 | $5,560 | 70% |
| Meal prep delivery (rented commercial kitchen) | Moderate: kitchen rental, packaging, delivery, ordering site | $30,000 | $23,200 | $6,800 | 23% |
| Corporate and family meal service | Moderate to high: leased kitchen, vans, staff | $55,000 | $47,000 | $8,000 | 15% |
Fixed and variable costs
For projections, the most useful split is between variable costs, which rise and fall with sales (materials, supplies, hourly labor, fees), and fixed costs, which you pay every month regardless (rent, salaried staff, insurance, loan payments).
| Business model | Variable costs (% of revenue) | Fixed costs per month | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal chef (cooking in clients’ homes) | 25.6% | $390 | Mostly fixed: needs steady volume to cover overhead |
| Meal prep delivery (rented commercial kitchen) | 64.0% | $4,000 | Mostly variable: profitable early, but watch cash flow |
| Corporate and family meal service | 61.3% | $13,300 | Mostly variable: profitable early, but watch cash flow |
What the numbers say
Personal chefs keep high margins because clients usually pay for groceries separately and overhead is low.
Meal prep scales through production, with ingredients, packaging and delivery as the main costs.
Corporate and family services add volume with predictable weekly orders.
The three models in brief
Personal chef. Cooking customized meals in clients’ homes, often weekly. See catering data.
Meal prep delivery. Weekly menus produced in a commercial kitchen and delivered or picked up.
Corporate and family meal service. Larger recurring orders for offices, teams and households.

A first-year projection: meal prep delivery (rented commercial kitchen)
New businesses rarely start at full speed. This projection assumes revenue ramps from 35% of the example month in month 1 to 100% by month 12, variable costs move with revenue, and fixed costs stay the same every month. It’s a planning illustration, not a forecast.
| Month | Revenue | Variable costs | Fixed costs | Profit | Cumulative |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $10,500 | $6,720 | $4,000 | -$220 | -$220 |
| 2 | $13,500 | $8,640 | $4,000 | $860 | $640 |
| 3 | $16,500 | $10,560 | $4,000 | $1,940 | $2,580 |
| 4 | $18,600 | $11,904 | $4,000 | $2,696 | $5,276 |
| 5 | $21,000 | $13,440 | $4,000 | $3,560 | $8,836 |
| 6 | $22,800 | $14,592 | $4,000 | $4,208 | $13,044 |
| 7 | $24,600 | $15,744 | $4,000 | $4,856 | $17,900 |
| 8 | $26,100 | $16,704 | $4,000 | $5,396 | $23,296 |
| 9 | $27,300 | $17,472 | $4,000 | $5,828 | $29,124 |
| 10 | $28,500 | $18,240 | $4,000 | $6,260 | $35,384 |
| 11 | $29,400 | $18,816 | $4,000 | $6,584 | $41,968 |
| 12 | $30,000 | $19,200 | $4,000 | $6,800 | $48,768 |
Year one: revenue $268,800, profit before owner pay $48,768. The first profitable month is month 2. Cumulative results bottom out at -$220, which is the minimum cash cushion this plan would need, before any startup costs.
Kitchen rental, software and marketing come before subscribers build, so this meal prep illustration turns profitable in month 2, with a cumulative low of about $200.
How meal businesses earn
- Weekly meal subscriptions.
- Personal chef service fees plus groceries.
- Specialty menus: keto, vegan, gluten-free, high-protein.
- Corporate lunches and team meals.
- Dinner parties and events for personal chefs.
Kitchens and permits
Prepared meals for sale usually require a licensed commercial kitchen. Many meal prep businesses start in shared commissary kitchens, renting hours as they grow. Personal chefs cooking in clients’ homes may not need a commercial kitchen in many places, but rules vary, so confirm with your local health department.
Food safety and labeling
Cooling, storage and transport at safe temperatures are critical for prepared meals. Label packages with contents, major allergens, reheating instructions and use-by dates, and keep records of temperatures.
A startup checklist
- Confirm kitchen and permit requirements with your health department.
- Earn food safety certification.
- Choose packaging that reheats safely and travels well.
- Set up ordering and subscriptions.
- Insure the business including product liability.
Menu planning and food cost
Rotating menus keep customers interested, while shared ingredients across dishes reduce waste. Cost every recipe, including packaging, and price to protect margins as ingredient costs change.
Where the opportunities are
- Dietary niches: diabetic-friendly, allergy-aware, athletic nutrition.
- Busy families with weekly subscriptions.
- Corporate wellness meals.
- Postpartum and senior meal support.
- Personal chef services for busy professionals.

Key numbers to track
Track active subscribers, churn, meals per week, food cost percentage, packaging cost per meal and delivery cost per order.
Common mistakes
- Producing meals in a home kitchen where the law requires a commercial one.
- Underpricing packaging and delivery.
- Menus that are too complex.
- Weak allergen labeling.
- High churn without feedback loops.
Marketing a meal business
Instagram photos, gym and wellness partnerships, corporate outreach, referral credits and reviews bring customers. See catering data.
Personal chef relationships
Personal chefs build long relationships around family preferences, allergies and schedules. Detailed client profiles and consistent communication keep clients for years.
Dietary claims
Describe meals accurately and avoid medical claims. Nutrition information should be calculated carefully if you publish it.
Scaling production
As orders grow, standardized recipes, prep lists and production schedules keep quality consistent.
Insurance
General and product liability insurance protect against illness claims and accidents.
Pricing
Price per meal or per week, with delivery fees or minimums, and review prices as ingredient costs change.
Sustainability
Recyclable or reusable containers appeal to customers; consider deposit-return programs for reusable packaging.

About this data
Workforce figures come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024 wages and the 2024 to 2034 projections, unless noted). Market figures cite their sources above. Business model figures are illustrative months built from typical prices and costs to show how revenue, fixed costs and variable costs fit together; they are not industry averages or guarantees. We review these profiles when new government data is released, at least once a year, and the same figures power the Business Idea Reality Check.
Licensing and rules
Meals prepared for sale generally must be made in a licensed commercial kitchen with health permits and inspections; state cottage food laws allow some low-risk foods from home kitchens but usually exclude perishable prepared meals; personal chefs who cook in a client’s own kitchen with the client’s groceries are treated differently in many places, so check local rules; food handler or food protection manager certification is common; packaged meals need labels with ingredients and major allergens; delivery requires food-safe temperature control. Requirements change; confirm with your state and local agencies before you start.

These figures cover the whole activity, which can be broader than this one business type. Across all small businesses, average fixed assets such as equipment, furniture and vehicles were ₹3,42,242 per establishment in 2025.
