How it makes money
Recurring weekly or biweekly cleans, plus deep, move-in and move-out cleans

A residential cleaning business cleans homes and apartments, usually on a recurring schedule. Customers stay for years if you’re reliable, which makes it one of the most dependable small businesses you can start with little money.

It’s part of the cleaning services industry, where demand is steady and reliability is what sets businesses apart.

Who it suits

Organized, detail-oriented people who are comfortable with physical work and with being trusted in clients’ homes.

Startup costs

Supplies and equipment (a good vacuum, microfiber cloths, mops and cleaning products), general liability insurance, a janitorial bond, a simple booking page and a few hundred dollars of local marketing. Many owners start with their own car.

Set up for trust

Clients are letting you into their homes. A written service agreement, insurance, bonding, a clear policy for keys and alarm codes, and background checks for any staff you hire all make it easier for people to say yes.

Pricing

Price by the home’s size and condition, and charge more for a first-time or deep clean. Offer a lower rate for weekly or biweekly service to build recurring revenue. Before quoting, work out your real cost per hour, including travel time, supplies, insurance and taxes.

How to find recurring clients

Start with neighbors and friends, then local community groups, real estate agents (move-in and move-out cleans) and short-term rental hosts. Ask every happy client for a review and a referral.

How to grow

Write a checklist for every room so quality stays consistent when you hire. Your first hire is a big step: check whether cleaners should be employees or contractors in your state, and set up payroll properly.

Watch out for

Underpricing, last-minute cancellations (set a policy), and physical strain. Rotate tasks and schedule realistically.
