Session packages, monthly coaching plans, small-group sessions

A personal trainer designs workouts, coaches technique and keeps clients accountable. Running it as your own business means you set your prices, choose your clients and decide where you train them.

It’s the lowest-cost way into the fitness industry, where gym membership hit a record 81 million in 2025 and the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects trainer jobs to grow 12% by 2034.

Who it suits

You love exercise science and people in equal measure. You’re comfortable selling your services, and patient with clients who struggle.

Get certified first

Choose a certification accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), which most gyms and insurers recognize. Add CPR and AED certification. Specialist credentials, for example in senior fitness, strength and conditioning or pre- and post-natal training, help you charge more.

Where you’ll train clients

  • In clients’ homes or outdoors. No rent; you bring portable equipment.
  • Online. Video sessions and app-based programs let you coach anyone, anywhere.
  • In a rented space. Some gyms let independent trainers rent time or pay a per-session fee.

Pick a niche

Generalists compete on price. Specialists don’t. Strong niches right now include adults over 65, the fastest-growing group of gym members in 2025, as well as strength training for women, sports performance for teens, and post-rehab fitness in partnership with physical therapists.

How it makes money

Sell packages of sessions or monthly coaching plans rather than single sessions, so clients commit and your income is predictable. Small-group training, with two to six people at once, raises your hourly income while lowering the price for each client.

Watch out for

Cancellations (set a 24-hour policy), burnout from early and late sessions, and working outside your scope. Refer clients with injuries or medical conditions to a healthcare professional.
