Two kinds of report
- Business type report: for one kind of business, such as a bakery, salon or courier service. It covers market size, customer demand, what businesses earn, competition, your state’s profile, licences and your own plan figures.
- Consumer market report: for the customers in a state. It covers people and households, spending power and state income, how people split their spending across 21 categories (with the estimated monthly market for each), customer segments by spending level, inequality and spending by type of household.
What’s in your India market research report
- Summary: the key findings in plain English.
- Market size: how many small businesses work in this activity across India, urban and rural, with an estimate for your state.
- What businesses earn: average annual value added per business, urban and rural, for owners working alone and businesses that hire, with pay per hired worker, adjusted for your state where the survey sample is large enough.
- Competition and structure: how many businesses are one-person operations and how many workers a typical business has.
- State profile: your state’s small businesses in manufacturing, trade and services, its rank and earnings, and its GST registration threshold.
- India’s economy: growth, inflation, population, the labour force and other context from the World Bank.
- Licences and registrations: a checklist for your type of business.
- Your plan against the benchmarks: add your expected monthly sales and costs, and see your value added and what’s left for you, compared with typical businesses.
- Next steps: the matching guides and free tools.
You choose which sections to include. Every figure is sourced, and estimates are labelled as estimates.

- Search for your business type and pick the closest match. The report names the survey activity it uses, which can be broader than your exact business.

- Add your own figures if you have them. They stay in your browser.
- Read the free summary, then create a free account to open the full report. Enter your name and email, and we’ll email you a link: no password needed. The link brings you straight back to your report.
- Download the PDF, copy the link to share the report, or save it to your account to open again on any device.
Consumer data: spending and population
Consumer reports use MoSPI’s Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2023-24, which asked more than 2.6 lakh households what they spend, and the official population projections of the National Commission on Population. Monthly market figures multiply spending per person by the projected population, and state category splits apply India’s rural or urban spending pattern to each state’s spending level, so they’re labelled as estimates. Business type reports use the same data in their Customer demand section: how much households spend on what that business sells.
Where the data comes from
The market and earnings figures come from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE): the 2023-24 full report for 46 business activities and every state and union territory, and the 2025 factsheet for the latest national figures. Economic context comes from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators. GST thresholds follow section 22 of the CGST Act and Notification 10/2019-Central Tax.
ASUSE covers unincorporated non-farm businesses: proprietorships, partnerships and similar enterprises, which make up the vast majority of India’s small businesses. It doesn’t cover companies, construction or farming, so for those business types the report explains what isn’t covered and still includes the economy, licences and your own plan figures.
Frequently asked questions about the India market research report
Is the India market research report free?
Yes. The summary is free for everyone, and the full report is free with an Advanton account.
Why do I need an account for the full report?
A free account lets you download reports as PDFs and save them to open on any device. It takes a minute: enter your name and email, and click the link we send. There’s no password, and you can delete your account at any time.
Can I use the report for a bank loan?
You can include it as background in a business plan or loan application. Banks will also want your own projections, so add your figures in the plan section, and see our guide to writing a business plan for a bank loan.
What does the consumer market report show?
How many people live in your state, how much they spend each month compared with the rest of India, and how they split that spending between food, transport, rent, education, health, services, clothing, durables and more, with an estimated market size for each category.
Why does my state show "estimate"?
The survey publishes activity figures for all of India and sector figures by state, but not activity figures by state. The tool estimates your state’s numbers from its share of the sector, and says so.
What is value added?
It’s what a business produces minus what it spends on materials and other inputs, before paying workers, rent, interest and the owner. For a small business, it’s the best single guide to the income it generates.
How often is the data updated?
We update the report when MoSPI and the World Bank publish new figures. Each report lists the survey years it uses.
