Advanton’s global data explorer and country pages show 39 indicators for 217 economies, plus World Bank averages for the world, regions and income groups. This page explains where the figures come from and how to read them.
Source and license
All figures come from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators (WDI), which brings together official statistics from national statistics offices, central banks and international agencies such as the IMF and the International Labour Organization. The World Bank publishes the data under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license, so you are free to reuse it with credit to the World Bank.
We use the World Bank’s figures exactly as published, without adjusting them. Our current snapshot was retrieved in November 2026 through the Datahub mirror of the World Bank’s data service, which copies the official figures every month. We spot-check samples against widely published figures.
How often the data changes
The World Bank updates most indicators a few times a year, and countries often revise past figures. Recent years are the most likely to change. Each country page shows the date of the snapshot it uses, so you can see how current the figures are.
Which year you are seeing
Countries publish data on different schedules, so the newest year varies by country and indicator. Every figure on our pages shows its year. In the explorer’s Ranking and Map views, "Latest available" uses each country’s most recent figure from the last three years of that series; older figures are left out so countries are compared fairly.
How rankings work
Ranks compare countries from highest (1st) to lowest value, among countries with data from the last three years of each series. A high rank is not always good news: a high rank for inflation or unemployment means a high rate. World Bank averages for regions and income groups are not ranked.
World and regional averages
Figures labeled World, regions (such as Sub-Saharan Africa) and income groups (such as Upper middle income) are calculated by the World Bank, usually weighted by the size of each economy or population. Country pages group neighbors using United Nations geographic regions, which can differ from World Bank regions.
Limits of the data
- Gaps: smaller countries and territories often have missing years or indicators. We never fill gaps with estimates of our own.
- Survey-based figures, such as the Gini index, come from household surveys that some countries run only every few years.
- Informal work is common in many countries, so unemployment and business registration figures can understate real activity.
- Exchange rates affect every figure in US dollars, so dollar figures can rise or fall without real change in the economy. Purchasing power parity (PPP) figures adjust for this.
- Discontinued data: the World Bank stopped its Doing Business rankings in 2021, so we do not show them. Its replacement, Business Ready (B-READY), covers fewer countries so far.
Country names and maps
We use the country names and coverage of the World Bank, in plain English (for example, "South Korea" rather than "Korea, Rep."). The World Bank does not publish data for some places, such as Taiwan. Map boundaries come from Natural Earth (public domain). Boundaries and names shown on our maps do not imply endorsement or acceptance by Advanton.
