Figures as of October 2026. Sources are listed at the end of this page.

Every business needs signs: storefronts, banners, vehicle graphics, window lettering, trade show displays and ADA-compliant room signs. Sign shops combine design with production and installation, and they often serve the same clients year after year. Graphic designers, who create much of the artwork, earned a median of $61,300 in May 2024, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted about 265,900 of them. Below is the key industry data on sign making businesses, with costs, business models and a first-year projection.

Businesses range from vinyl and print shops to full-service sign companies building illuminated signs and vehicle wrap specialists. Permits, electrical rules and accessibility standards matter for installed signs.

The workforce

Occupation Jobs (2024) Median pay (May 2024) Projected growth, 2024 to 2034

Business models compared

The figures below are illustrative months from our research, not industry averages. They show how revenue and costs typically fit together; your market, prices and costs will differ.

Business model Startup costs Example monthly revenue Costs Profit before owner pay Margin
Vinyl and print sign shop Moderate: wide-format printer, vinyl cutter, laminator, software $20,000 $11,800 $8,200 41%
Full-service sign company (fabrication and installation) High: fabrication shop, CNC router, bucket truck, electricians $60,000 $50,200 $9,800 16%
Vehicle wrap specialist Moderate: printer, laminator, wrap bay, installers $30,000 $18,600 $11,400 38%

Fixed and variable costs

For projections, the most useful split is between variable costs, which rise and fall with sales (materials, supplies, hourly labor, fees), and fixed costs, which you pay every month regardless (rent, salaried staff, insurance, loan payments).

Business model Variable costs (% of revenue) Fixed costs per month What it means
Vinyl and print sign shop 23.0% $7,200 Mostly fixed: needs steady volume to cover overhead
Full-service sign company (fabrication and installation) 45.8% $22,700 Balanced: margins improve as volume grows
Vehicle wrap specialist 39.7% $6,700 Balanced: margins improve as volume grows

What the numbers say

Materials are a modest share of price for printed signs, so design speed and production efficiency drive margins.

Fabrication companies take larger projects with shop, equipment and crew costs.

Vehicle wraps carry strong margins when installers work efficiently.

The three models in brief

Vinyl and print sign shop. Banners, yard signs, decals and window graphics. See printing and signs data.

Full-service sign company. Monument, channel letter and illuminated signs with permits and installation.

Vehicle wrap specialist. Fleet graphics and full wraps. See graphic design data.

Cost structure: full-service sign company (fabrication and installation)

Each cost as a share of the example month’s revenue ($60,000):

Cost Monthly amount Share of revenue Type
Materials and components $18,000 30.0% Variable
Designers and fabricators $10,000 16.7% Fixed
Installation crew pay $8,000 13.3% Variable
Shop rent $4,000 6.7% Fixed
Equipment and truck payments $3,500 5.8% Fixed
Payroll taxes and benefits $2,500 4.2% Fixed
Permits and engineering $1,500 2.5% Variable
Marketing $1,500 2.5% Fixed
Insurance $1,200 2.0% Fixed
Profit before owner pay $9,800 16%

A first-year projection: full-service sign company (fabrication and installation)

New businesses rarely start at full speed. This projection assumes revenue ramps from 35% of the example month in month 1 to 100% by month 12, variable costs move with revenue, and fixed costs stay the same every month. It’s a planning illustration, not a forecast.

Month Revenue Variable costs Fixed costs Profit Cumulative
1 $21,000 $9,618 $22,700 -$11,318 -$11,318
2 $27,000 $12,366 $22,700 -$8,066 -$19,384
3 $33,000 $15,114 $22,700 -$4,814 -$24,198
4 $37,200 $17,038 $22,700 -$2,538 -$26,736
5 $42,000 $19,236 $22,700 $64 -$26,672
6 $45,600 $20,885 $22,700 $2,015 -$24,657
7 $49,200 $22,534 $22,700 $3,966 -$20,691
8 $52,200 $23,908 $22,700 $5,592 -$15,099
9 $54,600 $25,007 $22,700 $6,893 -$8,206
10 $57,000 $26,106 $22,700 $8,194 -$12
11 $58,800 $26,930 $22,700 $9,170 $9,158
12 $60,000 $27,480 $22,700 $9,820 $18,978

Year one: revenue $537,600, profit before owner pay $18,978. The first profitable month is month 5. Cumulative results bottom out at -$26,736, which is the minimum cash cushion this plan would need, before any startup costs.

Designers, fabricators, rent and equipment start before contracts fill the schedule, so this sign company illustration turns profitable in month 5, with a cumulative low of about $26,700, before shop equipment purchases.

How sign shops earn

  • Banners, yard signs and decals.
  • Storefront and monument signs.
  • Vehicle wraps and fleet graphics.
  • ADA and wayfinding signs.
  • Installation and maintenance services.

Permits and zoning

Cities regulate sign size, height, lighting and placement. Handling permits for clients adds value and prevents costly removals. Learn local codes in every city you serve.

Electrical signs

Illuminated signs must meet electrical safety standards, typically including listing by a testing laboratory, and many jurisdictions require licensed electricians for connections. Partner with electricians if you don’t have them on staff.

A startup checklist for sign making businesses

  • Choose equipment for your main products.
  • Learn sign codes and permit processes.
  • Insure the business including installation risks.
  • Build relationships with electricians and installers.
  • Create pricing for common products.

ADA signage

Certain permanent room signs need raised characters, braille, contrast and mounting heights that meet ADA standards. Accurate ADA signage is a valuable specialty for offices, schools and healthcare facilities.

Where the opportunities are

  • Fleet graphics for contractors and delivery companies.
  • ADA and wayfinding packages.
  • Storefront refreshes for new businesses.
  • Event and trade show graphics.
  • Sign maintenance contracts.

Key terms

Term Meaning
Wide-format printer Printer for banners and large graphics
Channel letters Individual illuminated letters on storefronts
Wayfinding Signs guiding people through buildings
Laminate Protective film over printed graphics

Fast turnaround

Many sign orders are urgent, such as grand openings and events. Fast proofs and production win loyal customers.

Key numbers to track

Track revenue per job, material cost percentage, turnaround time, reprints and repeat customers.

Common mistakes

  • Installing without permits.
  • Spelling and proofing errors.
  • Underpricing installation.
  • Wrong materials for outdoor use.
  • Unsafe work at heights.

Marketing a sign business

Your own signs and vehicles are advertising; add chamber of commerce membership, builder and landlord relationships and reviews. See printing and signs data.

Proofing

Signed proofs prevent costly mistakes; check spelling, colors and dimensions carefully.

Materials

Choose vinyls, inks and substrates rated for outdoor life and climate.

Vehicle wrap installation

Clean bays, controlled temperatures and skilled installers prevent bubbles and failures.

Recurring clients

Franchises, property managers, contractors and event organizers reorder signs regularly, so fast reorders and saved artwork files keep them coming back.

Equipment

Printers, cutters and routers are major investments; maintain them carefully and keep spare parts for critical equipment.

Pricing sign work

Price by square foot for printed graphics and banners, by project for fabricated signs and by panel or vehicle for wraps. Include design, permits, installation and travel separately so quotes stay profitable and customers understand what they’re paying for.

Monument and illuminated signs

Larger signs require engineering for wind loads, footings, electrical work and permits. Many small shops partner with fabricators or electricians for these projects while managing design, permitting and client relationships.

Trade show and event graphics

Retractable banners, backdrops, table covers and floor graphics bring repeat orders from businesses that attend events regularly. Fast turnaround and consistent color matching win these clients.

Design services

Charge for design time, especially for logos and custom artwork.

About this data

Workforce figures come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024 wages and the 2024 to 2034 projections, unless noted). Market figures cite their sources above. Business model figures are illustrative months built from typical prices and costs to show how revenue, fixed costs and variable costs fit together; they are not industry averages or guarantees. We review these profiles when new government data is released, at least once a year, and the same figures power the Business Idea Reality Check.

Licensing and rules

Register the business; installed signs usually need local permits and must meet zoning rules on size, height, lighting and placement; electrical signs generally must be listed by a recognized testing laboratory and installed or connected by licensed electricians where required; ADA standards govern tactile characters, braille and mounting for certain permanent room signs; installation at heights requires fall protection and safe lift operation; some states license sign contractors. Requirements change; confirm with your state and local agencies before you start.

Small businesses like this in India

In MoSPI’s survey of unincorporated businesses (proprietorships, partnerships and similar firms), this falls under Printing. In 2023-24 India had 1.2 lakh such establishments employing 3.6 lakh workers, and 50.1% were run without hired workers. Across the wider manufacturing group, the number of establishments grew 6.48% between 2023-24 and 2025.

Typical figures for these businesses, 2023-24
UrbanRuralAll India
Value added per business a year₹6,13,412₹2,85,594₹5,71,210
Value added per worker a year₹1,98,319₹1,43,156₹1,93,520
Pay per hired worker a year₹1,48,783₹1,10,923₹1,46,775

Running it alone or with staff: businesses with no hired workers added about ₹2,16,025 a year on average, while those with hired workers added about ₹9,27,258 (all India).

Where these businesses are: the states with the most small manufacturing businesses are West Bengal (16.0%), Uttar Pradesh (11.8%), Maharashtra (7.7%), Gujarat (7.2%), Tamil Nadu (6.9%) of the national total (2023-24).

Value added is what a business produces minus what it spends on materials and other inputs, before paying its workers and owner, so it’s a rough guide to the income a typical small business generates. These figures cover the whole activity, which can be broader than this one business type. Across all small businesses, average fixed assets such as equipment, furniture and vehicles were ₹3,42,242 per establishment in 2025.

Licences and registrations to expect

  • Consent to Establish and Consent to Operate from your State Pollution Control Board, unless your activity is in the exempt white category.
  • Factory registration under the OSH Code once you have 20 or more workers with power (40 without).
  • BIS certification for products covered by mandatory quality control orders, and Legal Metrology registration for packaged goods.
  • Registration under your state’s Shops and Establishments Act if you have premises or employees.
  • A trade licence from your municipal corporation or council for many shop and service businesses.
  • GST registration once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (lower in some special category states), or earlier if you sell goods to other states or through e-commerce marketplaces.
  • Professional tax registration in states that levy it.
  • Free Udyam (MSME) registration, which helps with loans, government schemes and delayed-payment protection.

Rules differ by state and city. Check with your municipal corporation, state departments and a chartered accountant before you start.
