Like various other free web services, Google Classroom is a free to use service by Google for schools that simplifies that process of creating, distributing and grading assignments in a paperless way.
The main purpose of the web service is to streamline the process of sharing files between teachers and students.
Google Classroom is a combination of various services that google offers such as Google Drive Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, Gmail and Google Calendar.
Google brought these services together on one platform for assignment creation and distribution, writing, communication and scheduling which makes it super easy for the teachers and students to manage assignments.
It lets students attached photos of the assignments to be graded by a teacher, share files from other apps and access information offline.
It makes it easier for the teachers to monitor the progress of each student and return work after grading along with comments.

History and Features of Google Classroom
Google Classroom was officially launched on August 12, 2014. Since, its launch there have been many enhancements to the service such as a Classroom API and a share button was launched for for websites, allowing school administrators and developers to further engage with Google Classroom. Google calendar was also integrated into the Classroom web service for managing assignment due dates, field trips and class speakers.
In 2017, the web service allowed any personal Google user to join classes which was earlier available only to the users with a G Suite Education account. Moving a step ahead it became possible for any personal Google user to create and teach a class.
In a recent announcement on August 7, 2018, Google announced an upgraded Classroom platform with new features such as classwork section, improving the grading interface, allowing reuse of classwork from other classes, and adding features for teachers to organize content by topic.
Another important feature of Google Classroom is that it also encourages parent participation. Teachers can invite parents to the Google Classroom to share summaries of student work and to receive automated email summaries of student work and class announcements.
