Updated October 2026
WordPress powers a huge share of the web, and for good reason: it’s flexible, free and endlessly extendable. But that flexibility comes with work. You’re responsible for updates, plugins, backups and security, and in 2025 security researchers found more than 11,000 new vulnerabilities in WordPress plugins and themes. For many small businesses, a simpler platform makes more sense.
This guide covers eight alternatives, who each one suits, and how to switch without losing your search rankings.
Should you leave WordPress at all?
Table of Contents
Stay with WordPress if you publish lots of content, need specific plugins, or have someone who keeps it updated. Consider an alternative if:
- Nobody maintains your site, and updates pile up.
- You only need a few pages with your services, photos and contact details.
- You sell products and want inventory, payments and shipping in one place.
- You want a polished design without hiring a developer.
8 WordPress alternatives
| Platform | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Wix | Service businesses wanting drag-and-drop design | Moving away later usually means rebuilding |
| Squarespace | Design-led businesses: restaurants, salons, photographers | Fewer add-ons than WordPress |
| Shopify | Businesses that mainly sell products | Apps and transaction fees add up |
| Webflow | Designers and agencies wanting full visual control | Steeper learning curve |
| Ghost | Newsletters, blogs and paid memberships | Focused on publishing, not business features |
| Square Online | Businesses already using Square in person | Simpler designs |
| Google Sites | A basic information page, quickly | Very limited business features |
| A static website | Local businesses wanting fast, safe pages with nothing to update | No online store or member logins |
A static website is simply a set of finished pages with no database or plugins to hack. Our free website builder makes one in about 10 minutes, with a page for each service and every town you serve, and you can host it free.
How to choose
- List what your site must do: take calls, book appointments, sell products or publish articles.
- Check the essentials: your own domain, mobile-friendly design, page titles and descriptions you can edit, and a way to export your content.
- Try before you commit. Most platforms offer a free plan or trial.
- Think about the next three years, including the total cost after any introductory offer.
How to switch without losing search rankings
- Keep your domain, registered in your own name.
- List every page on your current site, especially the ones that get traffic.
- Keep the same addresses where you can. Where an address must change, set up a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one.
- Move your page titles and descriptions along with the content.
- Submit your new sitemap in Google Search Console, and watch for errors for a few weeks.
If you stay with WordPress
Keep it safe and fast: update often, use fewer plugins, keep backups and turn on two-factor login. Our step-by-step guide to securing a WordPress site explains how.
