USPS Click-N-Ship and Commercial Pricing: How to Pay Less for Every Package (2026)

October 27, 2026 Leave a Comment

If you still carry packages to the Post Office counter and pay whatever the clerk charges, you’re paying the highest postage USPS sells. Commercial pricing, the lower rate USPS offers businesses that buy postage online, has no contract, no minimum volume and no fee. Combined with label printing at home and free package pickup, it saves both money and hours every month, for a business shipping five packages a week or fifty a day.

This guide explains how commercial pricing works, how to use USPS Click-N-Ship, when shipping software is a better choice, what the July 2026 changes mean, and how to set up a simple shipping routine.

What is Click-N-Ship?

Click-N-Ship is USPS’s free online tool for buying postage and printing shipping labels. With a free USPS.com account, you can:

  • Buy labels at commercial prices for Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and USPS Ground Advantage.
  • Print labels on regular paper or label sheets, or with a thermal label printer.
  • Save addresses and package details for repeat shipments.
  • Schedule free package pickups from your business or home.
  • Create international labels with customs forms completed online.
  • Track every package from one dashboard.

How to ship with Click-N-Ship, step by step

  1. Create a USPS.com account with your business name and address.
  2. Weigh and measure your package with a shipping scale and tape measure.
  3. Enter the recipient’s address. Click-N-Ship checks it against USPS’s address database.
  4. Choose the service: compare Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express prices and delivery estimates.
  5. Pay and print the label.
  6. Attach the label securely to the largest side of the box.
  7. Schedule a pickup or drop the package off. Packages with prepaid labels can skip the counter line at most Post Offices.
  8. Send the tracking number to your customer.

Click-N-Ship or shipping software?

Click-N-Ship is free and works well for businesses shipping a handful of packages a day. As volume grows, shipping software adds automation:

Feature Click-N-Ship Shipping software
Cost Free Free plans at some providers; paid plans add features
Commercial prices Yes Yes; some also offer discounted Cubic pricing
Imports orders from your store No Yes, from Shopify, Etsy, Amazon, WooCommerce and others
Batch label printing Limited Yes
Compares other carriers No Many compare USPS, UPS and FedEx side by side
Automatic tracking emails No Usually

Popular options include Pirate Ship, Shippo, ShipStation and Stamps.com. Compare current prices and features, because plans change often.

Cubic pricing: a hidden saving for small, heavy packages

Cubic pricing charges by a package’s size rather than its weight, for small packages up to 20 pounds that fit size limits. It can be dramatically cheaper for small, dense items such as candles, supplements, hardware, books or cosmetics. It’s available through some shipping software. In July 2026, USPS simplified cubic tiers for soft envelopes and kept cubic measurements rounded to the nearest quarter inch.

The July 2026 changes, and what to do

On July 12, 2026, USPS made several changes to package pricing:

  • Ounce-based tiers ended for published commercial Ground Advantage prices. Packages under a pound no longer get separate, cheaper 4-ounce and 8-ounce prices at commercial rates. Some shipping software continues to offer ounce-based pricing below commercial rates for many destinations, so compare.
  • Dimensions are rounded up to the next whole inch for most packages.
  • The dimensional weight divisor fell from 166 to 139 for packages over one cubic foot, so large, light boxes are charged at a higher "dimensional" weight.
  • Analysts estimate these changes raised commercial Ground Advantage prices by an average of 11.8%.

What to do:

  1. Re-measure your packaging and round up to the next inch, as USPS now does.
  2. Downsize boxes wherever possible to avoid dimensional weight charges.
  3. Switch soft items to poly mailers or padded envelopes.
  4. Compare prices across tools and carriers for your most common package sizes.
  5. Update your shipping charges so your margins don’t shrink unnoticed.

A worked example: dimensional weight

Dimensional weight example: the same lamp billed at 15 pounds or 3 pounds depending on box size

Dimensional weight = length × width × height ÷ 139 (for packages over one cubic foot).

A 14 × 12 × 12 inch box holding a 3-pound lamp:

  • Volume: 14 × 12 × 12 = 2,016 cubic inches (more than one cubic foot, which is 1,728).
  • Dimensional weight: 2,016 ÷ 139 = 14.5, so it’s billed as 15 pounds, not 3.
  • In a 12 × 10 × 10 inch box (1,200 cubic inches, under one cubic foot), the package is billed on its actual weight.

Choosing the smaller box could cut that package’s postage substantially.

Equipment you’ll need

Item Why it matters
Digital shipping scale Accurate weights prevent underpaid postage and delays
Tape measure Accurate dimensions, especially now that USPS rounds up to the next inch
Label printer (optional at first) Thermal printers print fast, with no ink; regular printers work fine to start
Boxes and poly mailers in a few standard sizes Fewer sizes make packing faster and pricing predictable
Packing tape and cushioning Protects products and prevents damage claims

Setting shipping prices for your customers

How you charge for shipping matters as much as what you pay. Three common approaches:

  • Real-time rates: customers pay what the label costs, calculated at checkout. Accurate, but can put buyers off.
  • Flat-rate shipping: one shipping price for all orders, such as $6.95. Simple, but you lose money on heavy, distant orders.
  • Free shipping over a threshold: popular with customers, and it raises order sizes, as long as the threshold covers your costs.

A worked example (illustrative numbers): your average label costs $8.50, your product margin is 40%, and you want shipping to cost no more than 10% of an order. A free-shipping threshold of $85 keeps shipping at 10% of the order ($8.50 ÷ $85). On orders below it, charge a flat rate. Recalculate after every postage change.

Insurance and claims

USPS Ground Advantage and Priority Mail include insurance up to $100 for most shipments, and you can buy more for valuable items. Keep proof of value (an invoice or receipt), take photos of how you packed valuable items, and file claims promptly online if a package is lost or damaged. Some shipping software offers its own, often cheaper, package insurance.

Avoid shipping scams

Be wary of emails or texts claiming a package "couldn’t be delivered" and asking for payment or login details; USPS doesn’t ask for payment by text. Watch for orders shipping to freight forwarders with mismatched billing details, which can signal fraud, and always ship to the address on the verified order.

A simple shipping routine

  1. Batch your shipping: print labels once or twice a day.
  2. Keep supplies in one place: boxes, mailers, tape, scale and printer.
  3. Use a thermal label printer once you ship daily. Labels peel and stick, with no ink.
  4. Schedule pickups on shipping days.
  5. Send tracking automatically from your store or software.
  6. Review costs monthly, especially after USPS price changes.

When to move beyond Click-N-Ship

Consider shipping software when you’re printing more than about 10 labels a day, selling on several platforms, retyping order addresses, or want to compare UPS and FedEx prices too. The time saved by importing orders automatically often matters more than the postage savings, and fewer typed addresses means fewer delivery mistakes.

Common mistakes

  • Paying retail prices when commercial prices are free to access.
  • Entering the wrong weight or size, which can lead to adjustments and delays.
  • Oversized boxes that trigger dimensional weight charges.
  • Not comparing carriers for heavier packages.
  • Forgetting the temporary 8% USPS surcharge that applies from April 26, 2026 to January 17, 2027 when setting shipping prices.

Frequently asked questions

Is Click-N-Ship free?
Yes. You only pay postage, at commercial prices for eligible services.

Do I need a contract for commercial pricing?
No. Commercial prices are available to anyone buying postage online through Click-N-Ship or approved shipping software.

Do I need a special printer?
No. You can print labels on regular paper and tape them on. A thermal label printer saves time once you ship regularly.

Can I schedule a pickup for labels I bought online?
Yes. Free pickups can be scheduled with your regular mail delivery.

Can I print a label without a printer?
Some shipping options let you show a QR code at the Post Office, where staff print the label for you. Check availability at your location.

Can I use stamps to ship packages?
You can for some small, light packages, but you’ll pay retail prices and miss out on tracking unless you add it. Printing a label online is usually cheaper, includes tracking for most services, and lets you skip the counter line.
