Figures as of October 2026. Sources are listed at the end of this page.

Small businesses, families and individuals need legal help with contracts, real estate, estates, disputes and more. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted about 376,200 paralegals and legal assistants in 2024, with a median wage of $61,010 in May 2024 and little change projected through 2034. Lawyers earned a median of about $159,670, according to May 2025 wage data summarizing BLS figures.

Many attorneys open solo or small practices, often focused on areas like business law, real estate, estate planning or family law. Non-attorneys can offer legal document preparation in some states, but only within strict limits; only licensed attorneys may give legal advice or represent clients.

Business models compared

The figures below are illustrative months from our step-by-step guides, not industry averages. They show how revenue and costs typically fit together; your market, prices and costs will differ.

Business model Startup costs Example monthly revenue Costs Profit before owner pay Margin
Solo law practice Low to moderate: bar license, malpractice insurance, practice software, office $22,000 $4,650 $17,350 79%
Small law firm (2 attorneys plus paralegal) Moderate: staff, office, software, insurance $70,000 $29,100 $40,900 58%
Legal document preparation (non-attorney) Low: training, software, registration where required $8,000 $1,600 $6,400 80%

Fixed and variable costs

For projections, the most useful split is between variable costs, which rise and fall with sales (materials, parts, hourly labor), and fixed costs, which you pay every month regardless (rent, salaried staff, insurance, loan payments).

Business model Variable costs (% of revenue) Fixed costs per month What it means
Solo law practice 1.8% $4,250 Low costs overall: time is the main constraint
Small law firm (2 attorneys plus paralegal) 0.0% $29,100 Mostly fixed: slow start-up months are expensive
Legal document preparation (non-attorney) 0.0% $1,600 Low costs overall: time is the main constraint

What the numbers say

Solo practices have low overhead, so margins are high once clients are steady; profits here are before the owner’s own pay.

Small firms add staff before billings grow. Associates and paralegals increase capacity and fixed costs.

Document preparation is limited by law. It works only within each state’s rules on unauthorized practice.

The three models in brief

Solo practice. One attorney focused on a practice area and local clients.

Small firm. Several attorneys with paralegal support.

Legal document preparation. Form preparation without legal advice, where state rules allow.

Cost structure: small law firm (2 attorneys plus paralegal)

Each cost as a share of the example month’s revenue ($70,000):

Cost Monthly amount Share of revenue Type
Associate attorney $11,000 15.7% Fixed
Paralegal $5,000 7.1% Fixed
Office $4,000 5.7% Fixed
Payroll taxes and benefits $3,500 5.0% Fixed
Marketing $3,500 5.0% Fixed
Software $1,200 1.7% Fixed
Malpractice insurance $900 1.3% Fixed
Profit before owner pay $40,900 58%

A first-year projection: small law firm (2 attorneys plus paralegal)

New businesses rarely start at full speed. This projection assumes revenue ramps from 35% of the example month in month 1 to 100% by month 12, variable costs move with revenue, and fixed costs stay the same every month. It’s a planning illustration, not a forecast.

Month Revenue Variable costs Fixed costs Profit Cumulative
1 $24,500 $0 $29,100 -$4,600 -$4,600
2 $31,500 $0 $29,100 $2,400 -$2,200
3 $38,500 $0 $29,100 $9,400 $7,200
4 $43,400 $0 $29,100 $14,300 $21,500
5 $49,000 $0 $29,100 $19,900 $41,400
6 $53,200 $0 $29,100 $24,100 $65,500
7 $57,400 $0 $29,100 $28,300 $93,800
8 $60,900 $0 $29,100 $31,800 $125,600
9 $63,700 $0 $29,100 $34,600 $160,200
10 $66,500 $0 $29,100 $37,400 $197,600
11 $68,600 $0 $29,100 $39,500 $237,100
12 $70,000 $0 $29,100 $40,900 $278,000

Year one: revenue $627,200, profit before owner pay $278,000. The first profitable month is month 2. Cumulative results bottom out at -$4,600, which is the minimum cash cushion this plan would need, before any startup costs.

Associate and staff salaries start immediately, so this small firm illustration turns profitable in month 2, with a cumulative low of about $4,600. Real results depend on client development and collection rates.

About this data

Workforce figures come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024 and the 2024 to 2034 projections). Market figures cite their sources in the list above. Business model figures are illustrative months built from typical prices and costs to show how revenue, fixed costs and variable costs fit together; they are not industry averages or guarantees. We review these profiles when new government data is released, at least once a year. The same figures are available in a structured format for Advanton’s upcoming business projection tool.

Licensing and rules

Only licensed attorneys may practice law; bar admission, continuing education and trust account (IOLTA) rules; non-attorney document preparers must avoid giving legal advice, and some states (such as California) require registration and bonding for legal document assistants. Requirements change; confirm with your state and local agencies before you start.
