How it makes money
Weekly or biweekly contracts, seasonal cleanups, add-on services

A lawn care business maintains residential and commercial properties on a regular schedule: mowing, edging, trimming and blowing, plus seasonal work such as spring and fall cleanups.

It’s part of the landscaping and lawn care industry, where about 1.3 million people work and recurring contracts are the backbone of the business.

Who it suits

People who enjoy outdoor work, are comfortable with equipment, and like the challenge of running an efficient route.

Startup costs

A reliable mower (or two sizes), trimmer, edger, blower, trailer and hand tools, plus general liability insurance and simple marketing. Many owners start with a used commercial mower and their own truck.

Pricing

Price by property, based on the real time each one takes, including travel to the next stop. Charge extra for overgrown first cuts, and use a minimum price per visit. Annual contracts billed monthly smooth out cash flow.

Build dense routes

Ten properties on one street are far more profitable than ten spread across town. Market heavily around existing customers with door hangers and yard signs, and ask neighbors of happy clients.

Add higher-margin services

Aeration, overseeding, mulching, hedge trimming and leaf removal add revenue per stop. Fertilizer and weed treatments are profitable too, but usually require a state pesticide applicator license.

Plan for the off-season

Snow removal, holiday lighting installation, gutter cleaning or annual billing keep income flowing when grass stops growing.

Watch out for

Equipment breakdowns, rain delays, underpricing, and noise or gas-equipment rules in some cities.
