How it makes money
Margin between your retail price and the printer's base cost

With print-on-demand, you create designs and list products online. When a customer orders, a printing partner prints the item and ships it, and you keep the difference between your price and their base cost. You never hold stock.

It’s one of the cheapest ways into the e-commerce industry, where online sales grew 12.2% in the second quarter of 2026.

Who it suits

Designers, illustrators and people who deeply understand a community, such as a hobby, profession, sport or fandom you’re part of, and can make products its members want.

How it works

  1. Choose a print-on-demand provider and connect it to your own store or a marketplace.
  2. Upload designs and create product listings with mockup images.
  3. Order samples to check quality before selling.
  4. When orders arrive, the provider prints and ships automatically.

Niche is everything

Generic designs drown in competition. Designs for a specific group, like nurses, pickleball players or a particular dog breed, sell far better. Talk to that group, learn their jokes and pride points, and design for them.

Stay clear of copyright and trademark trouble

Only sell artwork you created or have licensed. Using brand names, logos, characters, sports team marks or song lyrics can get your listings removed and expose you to legal claims.

Pricing and margins

Base costs are higher than bulk printing, so margins are thinner. Price for profit after the base cost, platform fees, payment fees and advertising. Bundles and higher-margin items such as posters and mugs help.

Watch out for

Slow shipping and quality complaints you don’t control, ad costs that wipe out profit, and copycats. Build an email list so you can reach your customers directly.
